Hello and welcome to Gossip Time, a weekly guide to the stars by Allie Jones. This week: an actor dates a hostess, a duchess makes a grown man cry, and Hilary Duff offers her thoughts on the Australian economy.
The first thing I think about when I consider Chris Pine’s dating history is that he hooked up with Vail Bloom, a one-season hostess on Vanderpump Rules. The second thing I think about is that he also dated Audrina Patridge when she was on The Hills. (It didn’t work out because of lifestyle differences, Patridge revealed in her memoir Choices: To The Hills and Back in 2022. “He was more a real actor, theater actor and loved to read books and jazz music and didn't really like to go out to clubs or anything like that,” she wrote.) The third thing is probably the Olivia Munn stuff.
Pine, 44, loves to have a girlfriend. Since the tabloids first started tracking him in the late aughts, he’s averaged about one a year: models, hostesses, the occasional actress. In addition to Bloom, Patridge, and Munn, he’s also allegedly dated Zoë Kravitz (they’re still friends), the Icelandic model Iris Björk Jéhannesdéttir, his Star Trek Beyond co-star Sofie Boutella, the swimsuit model Amanda Frances, and, most recently, the British actress Annabelle Wallis.
He never talks about any of them in the press. As far as I can tell, he has only brought a date onto the red carpet once, when he took South African model Dominique Piek to the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. (He was promoting Rise of the Guardians, an animated film about Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny.) Pine and Piek reportedly broke up the following year.
Throughout Pine’s private dating life, however, we’ve always at least known the names of his girlfriends. That changed around this time last year, when Pine was first spotted with a Mystery Brunette on a boat in Sardinia. The tabloids couldn’t figure out who she was then, and they still don’t know now. Here’s Pine with the same woman in Portofino this week:
According to Page Six, Pine and his “brunette beauty” — name, age, and nationality still untraceable — got photographed going out to dinner twice on their trip. One time, Pine wore a bib.
Typically, when a celebrity is spotted with a mystery girlfriend, they are identified within a couple days — a week, tops. But this woman is still a walking question mark. The only person who seems to have any information about her is the anonymous presswoman behind DeuxMoi, and she’s withholding most of it, for some reason. In July, DeuxMoi revealed that Pine met his mystery brunette when she was — ok, here we go — a hostess at Saffy’s in East Hollywood. Per DeuxMoi, she has since quit her job. And she does have a name, but DeuxMoi is “keeping it under wraps.”
Is she wanted in some kind of criminal investigation? Good grief.
Pine’s private relationship goes to show, however, that it is possible for celebrities to maintain secrets about their personal lives. Most of them just don’t want to.
Now, another mystery: Is Meghan Markle a bad girlboss? Last week, The Hollywood Reporter published an item claiming that employees have been quitting Archewell, the charitable foundation/production company founded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, en masse, because Ms. Markle is “difficult.”
“She’s absolutely relentless,” a source told the magazine. “She marches around like a dictator in high heels, fuming and barking orders. I’ve watched her reduce grown men to tears.”
That sounds kind of amazing, actually, but Meghan did not take the comment as a compliment. Instead, she rushed to Us Weekly, where she gave current and (mostly) former staff members permission to speak on the record about how nice she is. The result: One of the most boring cover stories Us Weekly has ever published.
(Having friends talk to the tabloids on her behalf is kind of Meghan’s move; recall that she authorized five gal pals to speak about her good character to People back in 2019.)
Here are some of the scintillating quotes Us Weekly compiled from Meghan’s dear colleagues:
“The time I spent working with Prince Harry and Meghan was incredibly meaningful to me.” — Catherine St. Laurent, former chief of staff
“We all continue to be friends. The narratives we’ve seen suggesting the contrary are untrue.” — Ben Browning, executive producer of Harry & Meghan on Netflix
“They are dedicated and hardworking. It was impressive to witness.” — Josh Kettler, another former chief of staff
It goes on and on like that. Us Weekly also talked to unnamed sources who revealed that Meghan and Harry promote a casual, relaxed atmosphere in the workplace. They “sometimes show up at virtual meetings in baseball hats and T-shirts.” They are also generous, offering new parents at the company “unused car seats and baby items they no longer need.” Another source mentioned that some employees are planning a team karaoke night.
Personally, I think Meghan should worry less about the public’s perception of her leadership skills and more about what the F is happening with AMERICAN RIVIERA ORCHARD. It’s been six months since she announced this venture, and last we heard, she hasn’t even secured the trademark on the name yet. If I can’t buy all my friends and family Meghan Markle jam for Christmas I’m gonna be MILDLY DISAPPOINTED.
STUFF BY HILARY DUFF: Here’s a headline I was surprised to see in the Google news alert I have set for Hilary Duff:
Turns out there is a Melbourne-based architect also named Hilary Duff.
Finally, I must leave you with the news that Jeremy Allen White was photographed kissing his The Bear co-star Molly Gordon in L.A. this week:
This guy really loves to make out.
Thanks so much for opening this email. And thank you especially to paid subscribers! Your contributions keep this operation running, and I love you!
I 100% forgot the Olivia Munn of it all!
Megan and Harry make me laugh because they think they’re such hot stuff, ready to change the world, but also seemingly can’t get anything right. Like just go be rich and happy?!?
