As summer wedding season comes to a close, fall engagement season begins to blind us. Last year, former Olympic snowboarder Shaun White proposed to Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev right on time with a surprise Vogue photoshoot in New York in October. But now the wedding’s off: Dobrev showed up to a TIFF premiere for her friend Miles Teller without her five-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond last weekend, and when nobody noticed that, she leaked to People that her engagement is over.
“It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another,” a source told the tabloid. People also noted that Dobrev “unpinned her engagement post, which has been a staple on the top of her Instagram since White popped the question.” The drama!

Dobrev, 36, and White, 39, started dating during the pandemic and have been pretty public over the years, especially on Instagram and TikTok. In July, they posted a joint TikTok about planning a wedding and renovating a house together, and they did their last pap stroll hand-in-hand at the LA Farmer’s Market on August 31. But a few days later, Dobrev posted a TikTok about trying and failing to “fix a man.”
I guess she wants us to think White did something, and that’s why the wedding’s off. Perhaps things had been slowing down for a while though: She told E! News back in March that they didn’t have a wedding date yet.
“I really want to enjoy it and not rush that process,” she said of wedding planning. “We’re just enjoying being engaged at this point and being in that sort of phase because a lot of your life is — you have a boyfriend for half of your life and then you have a husband for half of your life, but the fiancé period is very short.”
You have a boyfriend for half your life and then you have a husband for half your life. Sounds real depressing when you put it like that. I hope she’s happier now!
In more romantic news, Jennifer Aniston officially “soft-launched” her hypnotist boyfriend Jim by posting a picture of the back of his head on Instagram:
This is serious.
Also serious: Zoë Kravitz and Harry Styles, who have been pap-strolling all over Rome and New York for the past three weeks (and who were just photographed at JFK, no doubt headed to pap-stroll in another global city). People reports that Styles met Kravitz’s dad, Lenny Kravitz, for lunch last weekend. “Everyone looked like they had a great time,” a source revealed. “She’s also been introducing Harry to friends. This feels more than casual.” Sure.
And here’s some late-breaking news regarding Kravitz’s BFF (and Styles’s ex from 2012): It looks like Taylor Swift might testify in the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni case after all? According to court docs filed today (that Baldoni’s team immediately leaked to the tabloids), Swift “agreed to appear” for a deposition sometime during the week of October 20, after she fulfills "preexisting professional obligations” (launching her new album). Baldoni’s team is trying to get Judge Lewis J. Liman to sign off on an extension so that Swift’s deposition can be heard.
Baldoni’s team initially subpoenaed Swift back in May but dropped the request after Tree Paine released a long statement saying Swift had nothing to do with the film and was being used as “tabloid clickbait.” Unless Baldoni’s team is blatantly lying now (possible?), it looks like they have since worked out some kind of private deal for Swift to give testimony. Hmm!
STUFF BY HILARY DUFF: Hilary Duff is recording new music and making a docuseries about her life?!?!?!?!?!
She also announced a very convoluted three-way partnership between her candle company Below 60, a nonprofit that rescues seals, and an iced matcha cafe called Whata Peach. I’ll let her explain:
Finally, I am shocked to report that Meghan Markle sent me jam:
After As Ever unceremoniously canceled my order of one jar of Apricot Spread and refunded my $9 (plus $7 in shipping) in June, I made peace with the probability that I would never hold a Sussex-branded item in my hands. But this week, I got the jam! For free! I’m not sure what that means for Meg’s profit margins, but I guess I’m slightly more likely to order something else from her company in the future, now that I know there’s a chance I get refunded and the order shows up three months later free of charge.
Did this happen to anyone else? I’ll report back once I have adequate time to seriously review this product.
Thanks so much for opening this email. And don’t forget about the SALE!!!

Omg!!! We need a jam taste test!
Everything I know about Hillary Duff I've learned in this very newsletter, so I think you've morally obligated yourself to watch the docuseries and report back here
