Hello and welcome to Gossip Time, a weekly guide to the stars by Allie Jones. This week: a very real and human celebrity couple breaks up, a comedian celebrates his birthday with a reality star, and Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson spon for $80 water.
Oh, this is sad. Precocious performers Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have ended their two-year relationship, a union filled with happy memories like walking up and down the same Miami street in front of the paparazzi for 75 days in a row. Both Mendes, 23, and Cabello, 24, typed up the same publicist-approved breakup statement into their Instagram stories Wednesday night, though they used different fonts. Which do you prefer?
Cabello, who once referred to her partnership with Mendes as “a very 3D human relationship,” also posted that she was reading Sally Rooney’s Conversations With Friends, which is an appropriate choice for someone going through a very 3D human breakup.
According to E! News, Mendes was the one who "initiated the conversation" leading to the split. A source said Cabello was “very upset” but agreed breaking up was for the best. Another source told Entertainment Tonight that it was simply “time to end things.”
At least they’ll always have the memories: pap strolls with empty coffee cups, going on Instagram Live to defend themselves against critics who said they “kiss like fish,” saying “It’s giving Cher,” etc. I wish them both peace in this difficult time.
In other contract-relationship news, Bradley Cooper and his ex-girlfriend Irina Shayk were photographed walking arm-in-arm in the West Village on Tuesday. Cooper, 46, and Shayk, 35, share a four-year-old daughter together, so they are occasionally spotted out together with her. But this photo opp was just Shayk and Cooper, who were smiling and “keeping each other close while catching up,” reports People. Do they want us to think they’re back together?
Shayk, you may recall, was most recently dating (?) Kanye West. Their short-lived relationship began in June, when Shayk and West, 44, were photographed taking a walk together in Provence. At the time, TMZ reported that the rapper and model were “100% romantically together.” But just two months later, sources told People that Shayk and West were over, and that “it was never a serious thing that took off.”
A source noted, however, that West still thought Shayk was “amazing,” leaving the door open for a reconciliation. In the meantime, he has reportedly been dating a 22-year-old model named Vinetria. My best wishes to all of these people in their ongoing negotiations.
Meanwhile, West’s estranged wife Kim Kardashian is still dating Pete Davidson, as evidenced by photos Flavor Flav (??) posted on Instagram Wednesday.
That’s Davidson, 28, Kardashian, 41, Flav, 62, and Kris Jenner, 66, doing an ad for Skims while celebrating Davidson’s birthday this week. According to People, this group of lifelong best friends gathered at Jenner’s Palm Springs manse for a party that may or may not have included other guests. (We have no evidence of that at the moment.)
A source told the tabloid that Kardashian and Davidson “are still dating and enjoying it.” The insider added that “even when they are on different coasts, Kim and Pete stay in touch," which is a sure sign of a healthy relationship. Another source told Us Weekly that “Kim lights up when she’s around Pete,” and “their chemistry is off the charts and getting stronger each passing day.” And Page Six reported last night that Kardashian and Davidson are “officially dating,” whatever that means.
Here they are holding hands in Palm Springs on Wednesday — very official. Do you think they also kiss?
STUFF BY HILARY DUFF: This week, Hilary Duff participated in a TikTok trend about herself. I think she totally got it.
Finally, I’ll leave you with this photo of Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson leaving Erewhon on Sunday:
You’ll notice that Martin is carrying a half-gallon bottle of “Ophora water,” which retails for $80 a case. It’s nice to see the couple carrying on the time-honored tradition of “candid” grocery-store spon-con with such an insane product. Let me know if anything about this photo motivates you to set your money on fire.
